 Bees can gauge their airspeed, measure tilt with UV sensors that track the horizon, and position themselves properly with an internal gyroscope. The have two compound eyes, each with 7000 hexagonal facets. These facets are windows to sub-eyes call ommatidia, which are tiny tubes containing their own lens and light-detecting cells. Each tube points in a different direction, enabling vision over a wide area. Such eyes are superb for detecting motion, since a small shift will cause different facets to detect the image. Bees can communicate location and range of discovered feeding sources to the rest of the hive with a characteristic dance that gives navigation instructions. And the honey they produce is incredibly nutritious and is preserved without refrigeration. Could bees be a product of chance, random processes of mutation and natural selection? |
