Central and South American forests, the glasswing butterfly with its transparent wings can be difficult to spot among the dense undergrowth. Glasswing caterpillars are voracious eaters, feasting on such poisonous plants as oleanders and nightshades. The toxins they acquire from their food make the larvae unpalatable to predators.

Ecologist use glasswings as indicators of the quality of the rainforest. An abundance means the forest is healthy, while a decline indicates a detrimental change in the ecosystem. As with many other types of animals in the area, the glasswing¹s survival is threatened by the destruction of the rainforest.
