Flamingo |
![]() From the Latin word for "flame" comes the name of the brightly colored flamingo. These birds obtain their distinctive coloring (ranging from pale pink to crimson or vermilion) from certain pigments (mainly carotenoids) found in the algae, insects and shrimp that make up their diet. Gray or white when hatched, a young flamingo may need as long as three years to become fully colored. |
