An Open Letter Reviewing Scriptural and Scientific Evidence For Creation

1.0 Holy Scripture is the inspired Word of God.

        Many infallible proofs show the Bible to be the authentic Word of God. It is trustworthy, inerrant, borne out by archeology, and it’s inspired by God, the Creator (2 Tim 3:16) --it is the Manufacturer’s Handbook. There are innumerable evidences of its divine inspiration and authority (1). Furthermore, the Bible is meant to be understood by ordinary people; i.e., God is capable of saying what He means, and means what He says.

        Hebrew scholars have proven that the Genesis text is a historical narrative, not Hebrew poetry, to a confidence factor in excess of 99%. It must be taken literally (2).

2.0 Creationism is foundational to many doctrines of Christianity (25).

        The Creator and creationism are fundamental to Christianity, containing the foundations of the essential doctrines in the Bible (Table 1).

        And according to our Lord Jesus Christ, Belief in the Resurrection requires belief in Genesis (Luke 16:31). Genesis is the only book that gives an account of the origins of life, mankind, laws, government, marriage, culture, nations, and races; where sin and death came from, and the first promise of the Redeemer.

2.1 The Blood Covenant

        The Book of Genesis teaches that God brought death as a result of Adam’s sin, but the first death was not Adams--it was a sacrifice of an innocent animal, so that Adam could be spared awhile. God gave Adam and Eve clothing of sacrificed animal skins as a covering for their shame. This was the first death. In Hebrews 9:22, referring to the Law of Moses we read:

                    "Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin"

        But God didn’t wait until the time of Moses to initiate the blood sacrifice--it started with Adam. This Crimson Thread of the Blood Covenant threaded through Passover and the Law of Moses until Calvary, when on that last night in the upper room, at the Passover Feast, Jesus declared, "This is the blood of the New Covenant, shed for the forgiveness of sin." What value would the sacrifice have if death of "tooth and claw" had been going on for millions of years before Adam’s Fall into sin?

2.2 The Plan of Salvation

        The act of the special creation of Adam and Eve as one [perfect] man and woman and their subsequent fall into sin is fundamental to the necessity for a Savior for all people (3).

3.0 The Bible addresses all truth: science, history, & spiritual.

        Genesis explains fully the human condition and fits well with the observed facts of science. As the written Word of God, the Bible is historically and scientifically true, and authoritative on all subjects with which it deals. Not only are there no mistakes or contradictions in the Bible, but also whenever the Bible deals with scientific or historical matters of fact, it is completely accurate (4). Science is knowledge, and the Bible is a book of true and factual knowledge throughout. The proper response of Christians to the observations of science is worshipful awe of the Creator, as did Isaac Newton. In fact, the people who created science were creationists (Newton, Kepler, Maxwell, Maury, Linnaeus, Boyle, Kelvin, Faraday, Pasteur, et al.) (5).

        Science has shown that the universe is a continuum of space, time, and matter/energy, all of which must exist simultaneously from the beginning. This fundamental truth is taught in the very first verse of the Bible: "In the beginning (time), God created the heaven (space) and the earth (matter)." The foundational verse of the Bible thus yields the foundational fact of science! (6)

        As a book of history, the Genesis account is a simple but factual presentation of actual events, and therefore provides a reliable framework for scientific research into the question of the origin and history of life, mankind, the Earth and the universe. We determine true history by the account of eyewitnesses. Jesus Christ, Creator was there and the witness to Creation. The New Testament genealogy of Christ establishes that Adam lived only a few thousand years before Christ.

4.0 True science and scripture are completely compatible,

        Scientific evidence has never contradicted scripture, but rather there exists a conflict between Biblical history and the philosophical presuppositions used in the interpretation of some scientific data. The prevalent attitude in the academic and scientific community is just the opposite, that science and religion are completely incompatible (7). Christians need to use the Bible as an interpretive framework to evaluate scientific data, not use naturalistic assumptions to direct our Bible interpretations (8). Pastors need to integrate all knowledge into a biblical worldview in their teaching.

4.1 Evolution is not science.

        Evolution theory, on the other hand, is not compatible with scripture, but evolution is not science. Science is knowledge gained by observation and experiment, and must be falsifiable. Science makes observations in the present; evolution is a theory about the past, and has never been observed.

        Evolution theory contains a set of philosophical presuppositions that impose an evolutionary framework on the interpretation of biological and fossil evidence, as follows (9):

(1) Spontaneous generation of living things from non-living material must have occurred, but only once

                    (2) Protozoa gave rise to multi-cellular organisms

(3) Invertebrates and vertebrates are all interrelated

        These fundamental assumptions are axiomatic, not derived from any observations of science, the so-called "fact of evolution." Evolution starts with its own conclusion: a philosophy of materialistic naturalism where "design" of an intelligent creator is ground-ruled out. Darwin further assumed that organisms are related through common ancestors with similar (homologous) structures (the presumption of "homology", the cornerstone of Darwinism).

4.2 The failure of homology and the demise of Darwinism

        It turns out Darwin’s postulate of homology has fallen to scientific investigation. The sciences of genetics and embryology have totally disproved the idea. If mammalian species with similar forelimbs inherited them from a common ancestor, they ought to be traceable to a common embryonic development and common genes. But research has shown that these homologous structures develop from different parts of the embryos and different genes (10). This "fact of no-evolution" marked the demise of Darwinism decades ago. We conclude that the similarity of body structures was originated by an intelligent Designer who chose to reuse a few, basically successful designs. Instead of a common ancestor, we see the results of a Common Designer.

5.0 Scripture Rejects Darwinism.

5.1 Recent Origins and a Global Flood.

        Scripture teaches a recent origin for man and the whole creation. All basic kinds of living things were made by direct creative acts of God during the Creation Week described in Genesis. Whatever biological changes have occurred have accomplished only limited changes within the original created kinds (3), preprogrammed by genetic variability. This is why Darwin’s mythological species of finches in Galapagos can still interbreed, and produce more viable offspring (11).

        The days of Creation in Genesis do not correspond to geologic ages, but are properly translated as six consecutive 24-hour days. [There is no suggestion anywhere in scripture of the geological or astronomical eons of time commonly held by modern scientism. (8) ] In Genesis One the Hebrew word "yom" clearly translates as 24-hour days, the time reckoned by "evening and morning." Hebrew scholars agree on this (12). Genesis is corroborated by Exodus 20:

"For in six days God created the heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them,

and on the seventh day He rested" (Ex 20:11).

        Not only is this verse the "inspired" Word of God, it was inscribed by the Creator on the stone tablets given to Moses with the Ten Commandments, and is the basis of our calendar week of seven literal days. The timeline of history of the patriarchs given in Genesis establishes that the universe has existed for only a few thousand years.

        According to scripture, the Flood of Noah was a catastrophic, global geological event and much (but not all) sediment containing fossils originated at that time. The recent (last decade) resurgence of catastrophism in geology shows promise of enlightening the dark days of uniformitarianism that flourished during Darwin’s time, (the evolutionary principle of gradual buildup of strata--"the present is the key to the past") upon which the model of the "geologic column" is based. Geology texts now declare that uniformitarianism is testable and false. (13)

5.2 And God said.

        The following scriptures sound the death knell for evolution.

"By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host

of them by the breath of His mouth For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded,

and it stood" (Psalms 33: 6,9)

        Creation happened in a moment--not over billions of years of chance, random processes and cosmic accidents. God spoke, and it was done. Hebrews 11:3 says the same thing (14). Christians can either trust the so-called "experts" (atheistic naturalists) or the True Expert, who knows everything and was there to attest to it. If Genesis is wrong, the Psalms, Hebrews, Exodus, and the entire Bible must be wrong.

5.3 No room for God in Evolution

        Evolution is defined to be a purely chance, random process of accidental mutations reinforced by natural selection. Only naturalistic processes are allowed. Philosopher Jacques Monod makes this clear:

"It follows that chance alone is at the source of every innovation of all living systems in the

biosphere. Pure chance, absolutely free, but blind is at the root of the stupendous edifice of

evolution."

        Therefore, the idea of a God-directed evolution is a contradiction in terms. Evolution is the religion of materialistic naturalism, requiring blind faith in the so-called "fact of evolution." It is atheistic at its core, and the cornerstone of religious humanism, clearly stated in the Humanist Manifesto. Secular humanism has been declared a religion by the Supreme Court of the United States (15).

5.4 Multiply after their Kind

        Genesis teaches that living things were made after their own, separate and distinct kinds, and were created to "multiply after their kinds" (repeated 10 times in Genesis). So the model describing Creation is more like an orchard than a tree: all animal kinds separate and distinct at the start, with limited variation within kinds. This is exactly what the fossil record shows. Darwin’s principle of "descent from a common ancestor" is not consistent with creation "after their kind"--they are mutually exclusive ideas. Therefore, evolution is not God’s Method..

5.5 Order of Creation

        Evolution posits that the sun appeared before the earth, animals came before plants, and birds evolved from dinosaurs. But the Bible tells us that the earth and plants were created first, before the sun, and birds and fish were the first animals. People who hold to evolution theory, therefore, are implying that our God’s Holy Scriptures couldn’t even get it in the right order. That idea denigrates the Bible. Attempts by progressive creationists to harmonize Genesis with evolution theory resort to "overlapping days," (16) which fulfills the Paul’s prophecy of "vain babblings" by scientism given in 1Tim 6:20

"O Timothy, guard the Deposit, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and opposing

the theories of falsely-named science,"

6.0 Science has falsified Evolution Theory.

        The fossil record fails to support Darwinian gradualism, because evidence is lacking for gradual change from one kind of organism into more complex ones.

6.1 The Cambrian Explosion (17)

        Near the bottom of the Grand Canyon, in the oldest rock layers, we find the Cambrian strata, where life virtually explodes into existence-- a huge, world-wide fossil graveyard, with an awesome array of complex marine animals, including vertebrates; ie. all body plans exist at the start. Now, if vertebrates have no ancestors, neither do humans (which are vertebrates). In contrast to Darwin’s model of gradual appearance of complex life forms, organisms appear suddenly, fully formed, without a trace of ancestors. The fossils remain essentially unchanged until they disappear in extinction. The biota is less complex overall today than it was "in the beginning." The fact that there was a biological "Big Bang" disproves evolution.

        So, the fossils show CREATION, not evolution: complex animals at the beginning, separate and distinct, just like we learn from Biblical history. The hundreds of thousands of intermediate forms predicted by Darwinism do not exist--the "missing links" are still missing. Darwin’s hope that the fossil record would eventually prove his theory is a dinosaur destined for the museums of western history.

6.2 Scientists go on record against evolution.

        The recent book "In Six Days" (18) compiled from articles by 50 science scholars, all Ph D’s in science, gives a sampling of the hundreds of competent technical people who have examined the scientific evidence and rejected evolution. Many more have signed onto a website (19) expressing serious doubts about the theory. Michael Denton, a research biologist in Australia says the "grand claims" of evolution remain as unsubstantiated today as in Darwin’s day (20).

6.3 Laws of Information and probability prevent evolution

        The laws of information prove that life could not have occurred spontaneously, and prohibit living things from evolving by chance. Natural/chance processes only decrease information, so life cannot evolve from simple to complex. The probability that the highly complex specifications for proteins in the DNA code occurred by chance is essentially zero. The instructions (message) in the DNA information of cells could only have come from an intelligent source (21).

        The specified complexity of living cells cannot be the result of evolutionary chance processes. Proteins, the building blocks of life, never happen by chance--they can only be produced by chemical machines in the cell, which consist of many other proteins. So, which "evolved" first: proteins? or the proteins that make other proteins? Furthermore, only left-handed amino acids are found in proteins in living things; they are not left to chance. This is the fingerprint of the Creator. Look in a shoe, it says, "Made in Taiwan." Look at a cell, it says, "Made by God" (26).

        Quoting from the findings of the Fourth International Congress for the Study of the Origin of Life (21):

                    "It has now been determined unequivocally by a large number of scientists that all evolutionary

                    theses that living systems developed from poly-nucleotides which originated spontaneously, are

                    devoid of any empirical base".

7.0 Jesus was a Biblical Creationist

There are over 200 references to the Book of Genesis in the New Testament. John Chapter One and Colossians One tell us that Jesus is Creator. He is the Great Eyewitness to the Creation.

And Jesus taught from Genesis: In John Chapter 5, He said Belief in Christ is based on belief in Moses writings (i.e. Genesis):

John 5:46-47 For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed Me, for he wrote of Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how shall you believe My words?

    What Jesus seems to imply here is that believers need to trust the writings of Moses: the Pentateuch. This would include the foretelling of the coming of the Savior, the Fall of man, and the Flood, including the genealogies (which give Biblical evidence for a young earth). Therefore if you trust what Moses wrote, you would know who Jesus is.

In Matt 24:39, Jesus invokes the Genesis account of Noah’s Flood as a global flood, (but if evolution is true, Noah’s flood never happened).

In Mark 10:6, Jesus says Adam was created in the beginning: "From the beginning of Creation God made them male and female", clearly refuting progressive creationism or theistic evolutionism. God did not wait millions of years until cave men evolved into man--Adam was created in the beginning, according to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Believers in Christ accept the claims of Christ. He said in Luke 16:31 as follows:

" If they do not hear Moses (i.e., Genesis) and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded,

even though one rose from the dead",

speaking of Himself, and the importance of a belief grounded in Genesis. Jesus was a young-earth creationist, and Christians should be, too.

8.0 Scripture allows no Death Before Sin

        The presumption of death before sin destroys the plan of salvation. The Bible tells us that death (spiritual & physical) entered into the world by Adam’s one sin (Rom 5:12), not survival of the fittest. Struggle and death was a result of Adam’s sin and couldn’t have existed millions of years before Adam’s sin. The value of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is God (by His grace) giving man (through his faith) the gift of salvation (deliverance from the penalty of sin, which is spiritual death – Eph 2:8,9). Thus evolution cannot be true.

        The evolutionary process, as well as so-called "progressive creation," is the struggle for survival in a long string of accidents, reflecting no plan or purpose. Millions of years of death, carnivory, disease and decay are alleged to have occurred before Adam’s sin, with millions of extinct organisms leading ultimately to man. Such a story contradicts the Bible; the Biblical account is just the opposite. The Creation began with Adam, and was originally very good. God created animals to be vegetarians (Gen 1:29); therefore, there were no carnivores before the Fall. (Science has shown that lions can be raised as vegetarians and pastured with sheep.) It was man’s fall into sin and sin’s penalty (the "wages of sin") that brought death into the world (Rom 6:23).

        Was the Garden of Eden built on a fossil graveyard, representing a billion years of struggle, pain, disease, suffering, carnivory, killing, and death? Is not God a god of mercy and grace? If God called a bloodstained world of violence and disease "very good"; wouldn’t this call into question his truthfulness?

        Evolution would be the most wasteful, inefficient and heartless process that could ever be devised by which to produce mankind. Many entire kinds of animals (eg., dinosaurs) would have appeared and died out long before man evolved. If this scenario represents true history, then the redemption message is nonsense (24). The God of the Bible could never be guilty of such a cruel and pointless charade as this. Evolution cannot be God’s method of creation. Mankind went from perfection to corruption, not vice versa.

        Even the atheists know the importance of the concept of Sin/Death/Redemption to our faith in the Redeemer. G. Richard Bozarth wrote in the American Atheist in 1979,

"Without the original sin, who needs to be redeemed? Without Adam’s fall into sin

terminated by death, what purpose is there in Christianity? Destroy Adam and Eve and the

original sin, and in the sorry remains you will find the Son of God."

        Could this be why the humanists are pushing so hard to keep creationism or intelligent design theory out of public schools? They know Genesis is the foundation of Christianity. Surveys show that the overwhelming majority of young Christians abandon their faith soon after entering university and being exposed to evolutionary propaganda.

        Evolution destroys the foundation of the gospel: "Behold the [sacrificial] Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world."(John 1:29). If the foundations be destroyed, what shall the righteous do? (Ps 11:3) Trying to be a Christian without understanding the foundational truth of Genesis is like going to a movie in the middle (22). If you come "In the Beginning," you can understand the plot. If the Bible is not authoritative on matters of science and history, then it cannot be trusted on matters of salvation and eternal life (8).

        The implication of theistic evolution is that the Genesis is just poetry, sin is merely an inherited animal characteristic, Christ’s atoning death is a cruel joke (27), and the flood of Noah never happened. This is terribly wrong, and is not an option for Christians. The Bible says we were created in God’s image. God is not an ape! It also says we have no kinship with animals (Gen 2:19-20).

9.0 Conclusion

        We conclude with a quote from Harvard’s most prominent evolutionist, Steven J. Gould, who summarizes the mounting evidence against Darwinism as follows (23):

"The [Neo-Darwinian] synthesis, as a general proposition, is effectively dead,

in spite of its persistence in textbook orthodoxy."

        The Biblical and scientific evidence cry out: "Creation!"
